CLONETS-DS – Clock Network Services-Design Study Strategy and innovation for clock services over optical-fibre networks in Europe

Abstract: Long-distance time and frequency transfer methods based on optical fibre links have evolved rapidly in recent years, demonstrating excellent performance for frequency transfer and considerable promise for accurate time transfer. CLONETS-DS is a European Union-funded research and innovation action intended to facilitate the vision of a sustainable, pan-European optical fibre network for precise time and frequency reference dissemination.

“…Finished project CLONETS-DS [14] built on several preceding projects of the European metrology research programs such as NEAT-FT[10], OFTEN[11] and TiFOON[12], the former GN3+ project ICOF, the novel work package 6, Optical Time and Frequency Network (OTFN) of the GN4-3 project of GÉANT [9] and finally on its direct precursor project Horizon 2020 project CLONETS [13]. Within the CLONETS-DS project, we have proposed a multiple ring-based topology of a T&F dissemination network.…”

“…The notable difference is in the requirements on the underlying infrastructure, as the dark channels dedicated to photonic transfers must be amplified by specialized bidirectional amplifiers with the same propagation path for both transmission directions [18]. Despite these increased demands, the existing fiber-optic infrastructure provides a feasible vehicle for the development of sizeable photonic transfer networks-a task that has already been addressed by several scientific consortiums at multinational scale [19,20].…”
