Clonal diversity and host distribution in Bordetella bronchiseptica

Abstract: A total of 303 isolates of Bordetella bronchiseptica recovered from 11 host species were characterized by the electrophoretic mobilities of 15 metabolic enzymes, and 21 distinctive multilocus genotypes (electrophoretic types) were distinguished on the basis of allele profiles at the enzyme loci. The population structure of B.bronchiseptica is clonal, and its genetic diversity is limited in comparison with most other pathogenic bacteria, perhaps reflecting a relatively recent origin of the species. Electrophore… Show more

“…For a variety of bacterial species, phenotypic or natural history correlates of genetic structure have been recorded (Selander & Musser, 1990;Musser et al, 1987). The data presented here confirm earlier observations (Musser et al, 1985(Musser et al, , 1986a (Quentin et al, 1988(Quentin et al, , 1989.…”

“…Most of the B. bronchiseptica strains which contained IS1001 were obtained from pigs or rabbits, suggesting that these organisms represent distinct groups that became specialized and infect particular animals. This suggestion is supported by the results of previous MEE analyses of the B. bronchiseptica pig strains, most of which have been shown to belong to a single electrophoretic type (22). The ISl00I band patterns of B. bronchiseptica strains were more diverse than the B. parapertussis patterns.…”

“…org/bordetella). Multilocus electrophoresis further supports the existence in pigs of a somewhat divergent and relatively clonal population of B. bronchiseptica (Musser et al, 1987). Nonetheless, seals are the only animals for which there is convincing evidence of host-restricted genotypes of B. bronchiseptica.…”
