We present realistic models of flavor in SU(5) and SO(10) grand unified theories (GUTs). The models are renormalizable and do not require any exotic representations in order to accommodate the necessary GUT breaking effects in the Yukawa couplings. They are based on a simple clockwork Lagrangian whose structure is enforced with just two (one) vectorlike U(1) symmetries in the case of SU(5) and SO(10) respectively. The inter-generational hierarchies arise spontaneously from products of matrices with order one random entries.

We consider various bulk fields with general dilaton couplings in the linear dilaton background in five dimensions as the continuum limit of clockwork models. We show that the localization of the zero modes of bulk fields and the mass gap in the KK spectrum depend not only on the bulk dilaton coupling, but also on the bulk mass parameter in the case of a bulk fermion. The consistency from universality and perturbativity of gauge couplings constrain the dilaton couplings to the brane-localized matter fields as well as the bulk gauge bosons. Constructing the Clockwork Standard Model (SM) in the linear dilaton background, we provide the necessary conditions for the bulk mass parameters for explaining the mass hierarchy and mixing for the SM fermions. We can introduce a sizable expansion parameter ε = e − 2 3 kzc for the realistic flavor structure in the quark sector without a fine-tuning in the bulk mass parameters, but at the expense of a large 5D Planck scale. On the other hand, we can use a smaller expansion parameter for lepton masses, in favor of the solution to the hierarchy problem of the Higgs mass parameter. We found that massive Kaluza-Klein (KK) gauge bosons and massive KK gravitons couple more strongly to light and heavy fermions, respectively, so there is a complementarity in the resonance researches for those KK modes at the LHC.

Flavor Hierarchies from Clockwork in SO(10) GUT

The clockwork mechanism, which can naturally explain the origin of small numbers, is implemented in SO(10) grand unified theories to address the origin of hierarchies in fermion masses and mixings. We show that a minimal Yukawa sector involving a 10 H and 126 H of Higgs bosons, extended with two clockwork chains consisting of 16 + 16 vector-like fermions, can explain the hierarchical patterns with all the Yukawa couplings being of order one. Emergence of a realistic mass spectrum does not require any symmetry that distinguishes the three generations. We develop clockwork-extended SO(10) GUTs both in the context of SUSY and non-SUSY frameworks. Implementation of the mechanism in non-SUSY scenario assumes a Peccei-Quinn symmetry realized at an intermediate scale, with the clockwork sector carrying non-trivial charges, which solves the strong CP problem and provides axion as a dark matter candidate.
