“…Therefore, it is possible that other factors contributed to the congenital absence of the maxillary lateral incisors. Earlier studies 14,19,21,23) have reported that mutations in the PAX9 and MSX1 genes cause tooth agenesis and cleft lip and palate, suggesting that some cases of alveolar clefts and tooth agenesis may have genetic etiologies. In this study, 4 unilateral cleft patients were noted in whom the lateral incisors were present on the cleft side but missing on the non-cleft side (present-absent, 2.4%).…”
