Clinicopathological features of metaplastic breast carcinoma

Abstract: Metaplastic carcinoma of the breast is relatively rare and, in our series, its incidence was 0.6%. According to its immunohistochemical characteristics, MpBC can be interpreted as a subgroup of triplenegative breast cancers (TNBC). Five of the presented patients resembled the subgroup of TNBC with a basaloid phenotype. The chemotherapy regimens suggested in the treatment of MpBC are platin in the epithelial subgroup and high-dose anthracycline in the mesenchymal subgroup. There is a need of new studies that ev… Show more

“…1 In more than 90% of MBCs, CK5/6, CK14, and EGFR expressions are positive, whereas ER, PR, and HER2 are negative immunohistochemically. 9 Immunohistology panels with CAM5.2, AE1/AE3, CK7, CK5, CK14, and CK17 will demonstrate at least 1 keratin-positive profile. 3 In the absence of any keratin, another diagnosis should be entertained.…”

“…Metaplastic breast cancer (MBC) is a very rare type of invasive breast cancer in which the original cell type, usually glandular epithelium, differentiates into either epithelial and/or mesenchymal cell types with glandular and nonglandular components [1,2]. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), MBC includes several subtypes, including low-grade adenosquamous carcinoma, fibromatosis-like metaplastic carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, spindle cell carcinoma, mixed metaplastic carcinoma, myoepithelial carcinoma, and metaplastic carcinoma with mesenchymal differentiation-notably chondroid, osseous, and other types of mesenchymal differentiation [3].…”
