“…However, some investigators have reported that the superficial spreading type has a higher incidence of submucosal invasion than the common type. 8,9 In addition, the same studies showed no significant differences in the recurrence rate or survival rate between the two groups, 8,9 which agree with our findings. Although the 5-year survival rate for EGC is 90% or greater, 1-3,13 complete surgical extirpation of gastric cancer, with a sufficient resection margin from the tumor and removal of metastatic lymph nodes, is necessary for a good prognosis in all EGC cases.…”

“…Previous studies have reported that the superficial spreading type accounted for 5.46% to 11.0% of all EGC, [8][9][10][11] and the incidence of lymph node metastasis in the superficial spreading type of EGC was 20.3% to 30.0%. 8,9 Our results were also almost compatible with these previous reports. These studies also revealed a significantly higher incidence of diffuse type histology and lymph node metastasis in the superficial spreading type than in the common type of EGC.…”

“…In case of large superficial carcinomas, we should consider unfamiliar disease entity, superficial spreading type early gastric cancer, in which the product of the longest diameter of the tumors and the diameter perpendicular to it is greater than 25 cm 2 [10]. These cancers are known to have high incidences of undifferentiated adenocarcinoma, submucosal invasion, lymphatic invasion, and lymph node metastasis, but their survival is no different from the common types of early gastric cancer [11][12][13]. To achieve cure of the superficial spreading type of gastric cancer, a complete resection with free surgical margins and D2 lymph node dissection is necessary.…”

“…However, there were no significant differences in the anatomical distribution of lymph node metastasis (Japanese Classification), depth of invasion and lymphatic invasion between the superficially spreading and common tumors. Reported results of a higher percentage of lymphatic invasion are probably due to differences in the study population and in the definition of superficially spreading tumors [9, 10]. …”

“…However, a rare form of early gastric cancer, known as the superficially spreading type, is sometimes encountered. There are few reports concerning this type of early gastric cancer, the definitions and characterizations of which vary [6,7,8,9,10]. We therefore focused on the need to clarify the clinicopathological characteristics of superficially spreading early gastric carcinoma.…”
