Clinicopathological characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma in Serbia: The Melanoma Focus Study

Abstract: Based on this survey, there is a large unmet need for the new treatment options for metastatic melanoma in Serbia. The development of national guidelines, and greater involvement in international clinical studies could lead to widening of treatment options for this chemotherapy resistant disease.

“…Our results show no statistical difference in the incidence of different types of melanomas between men and women. SM was the most common type of melanoma (68.7%), followed by NM (15.4%), LM (10.4%) and AM (1.0%), coinciding with the results published for the US and EU [19]. Comparisons of anatomic localizations at UV-exposed regions, as expected, showed LM presence most commonly on the head and neck regions (61.9%), while AM was present on the lower extremities only [9].…”

“…The age‐standardized incidence rate of melanoma is 5.4/100 000 (males) and 4.9/100 000 (females), and mortality rates are 2.5/100 000 (males) and 1.2/100 000 (females), with rising trends in both of them . Relatively low incidence rates in central Serbia are accompanied by a large percentage of thick tumours (median Breslow thickness of melanoma was 3 mm; primary tumours with the thickness of more than 4 mm were found in 31.95–50% of patients) and a significant proportion of younger patients with thick tumours . This indicates the fundamental need for more effective primary and secondary prevention activities.…”

“…The liver is a frequent site of metastases from a variety of cancers including gastric, breast, melanoma, and pancreatic with colorectal cancer being the most common source. [1][2][3][4][5] Although surgical resection of metastatic lesions has proven effective and improves overall survival, many patients develop extensive or unresectable diseases not amenable to surgery. Regardless of the tumor source, the 5-y survival rate is less than 10% in patients with unresectable liver metastases.…”
