Clinicopathological characteristics and molecular analysis of primary pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma: Case report and literature review

Abstract: Primary pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (PMEC) is extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of a 71‐year‐old male patient with high‐grade PMEC involving the right upper lobe that was successfully resected via lobectomy. As a result of invasion into the pleural and paratracheal lymph nodes, four cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin were administered. There were no signs of relapse during 10 months of follow‐up. Furthermore, we reviewed the literature and summarized the surgical appr… Show more

“…The current literature indicated that the MECT1-MAML2 fusion gene was common in PMEC and was specific to this tumor (21). MAML2 rearrangement was much more common in low-grade (73.9%) than high-grade (18.8%) cases.…”

“…Primary PMECs are rare and still a challenge for diagnosis. Preoperative identification of patients with PMECs is important for the assessment of clinical outcome and the choice of treatment [ 13 , 14 ]. Herein, we analyzed and compared the CT features of PMECs with the common type of lung cancers (SCCs and adenocarcinomas).…”

“…The prognostic factors of MEC are controversial. Important prognostic factors of MEC include age, TNM stage and pathological differentiation grade (21)(22)(23). Poor OS was associated with older age, higher clinical stages, larger tumour size and non-surgical treatments (24)(25)(26).…”
