“…Eosinophilic ulcer of the oral mucosa was first described in adults by Popoff in 1956 and, in 1970, it was identified as a distinct entity by Shapiro and Juhlin 6 7. Since then, names such as eosinophilic ulcer, traumatic eosinophilic granuloma of the tongue, traumatic granuloma, atypical histiocytic granuloma and TUGSE have been used to describe the lesion.…”

“…Smaller ulcers may be seen in autoimmune disease (e.g., Sjogren's syndrome), granulomatous cheilitis, and Crohn's disease. [ 3 13 14 15 16 ] The clinical and microscopic features together with special stains for micro-organisms and immunohistochemical markers should assist in distinguishing these conditions.…”

“…They may be due to released tissue toxins or other reactants. [ 14 15 16 17 ] Eosinophils may be present in a variety of cutaneous and gastrointestinal conditions, often related to allergic, parasitic or drug-related causes, or as part of a systemic eosinophilia. However, in the most cases of oral eosinophilic ulceration these conditions are not evident.…”

“…The injury is identified, however, in less than 50% of cases. 2,4,[6][7][8][9][10][11] Simultaneous lesions are extremely rare. Elzay 3 argues that the presence of multiple ulcers excludes trauma as the only predisposing factor.…”
