“…8 Immunohistochemical studies using anti-BMP-2 antibody have shown heterotopic ossification to be associated with neoplasms in the lung. 32 IHO is seen more frequently in papillary thyroid carcinoma than in other organ carcinomas. Thus, BMP-2 expression in carcinoma cells was considered to be important for the IHO.…”

“…Several local factors are known to promote the metaplasia of fibroblasts into bone tissues, including BMPs and other transforming growth factor β proteins, as well as fibroblast growth factor . BMP‐2 can induce osteoblastic differentiation from pluripotent cells, and its expression in tumor cells with ossification or calcification has been reported in several tumors . Additionally, tumors with ossification showed BMP‐2 expression while those without ossification showed low or negative BMP‐2 expression in renal cell carcinoma, rectal adenocarcinoma, and thyroid papillary carcinoma .…”

“…The mechanism underlying intratumoral ossification is not well understood; however, it may involve bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which are members of the transforming growth factor‐β superfamily . BMP‐2 has been shown to induce osteoblastic differentiation from pluripotent cells, and its expression has been reported in several types of tumors with intratumoral ossification . BMP‐2 is therefore considered a possible mediator of this process.…”

“…Heterotopic ossification of primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma has been postulated to occur via intramembranous bone formation induced by the tumor cells (3). In an extensive review of 2269 surgically resected primary lung carcinomas by Shoji, 33 cases with heterotopic ossification, including 15 cases with intratumoral heterotopic ossification (IHO) and 18 cases with extratumoral heterotopic ossification (EHO) were identified (7). all cases with IHO were adenocarcinomas and 10 of 15 (66.6%) cases had confirmed positive mucin staining in the tumor cells.…”
