“…It remains controversial whether surgery is necessary, because chemotherapy plays a key role in the treatment for patients with esophageal small cell carcinoma [14]. Surgery may contribute to the long-term survival of patients without nodal metastasis, and patients with nodal metastasis have a better chance of long-term survival if the nodal metastasis is controlled or cured by chemotherapy or radiotherapy before surgery [15]. In locoregional disease, the indicated treatment is chemoradiotherapy, and then, if metastatic disease is still excluded, surgical resection can be considered [1].…”

“…Searching the literature in PubMed and Ichushi-Web using the key word 'small cell carcinoma of esophagus', we found that, between 1998 and 2007, there were 64 reported Japanese cases of SmCC of the esophagus in which the pathological TNM stage and survival was evident, when transthoracic esophagectomy with extended lymph node dissection was applied. There were a total of 47 cases in which esophagectomy was performed as a first-line therapy [5,6,[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24] . With the information from those 47 cases, we determined when esophagectomy for SmCC of the esophagus is indicated.…”
