Clinico-Radio-Histo-Molecular and Neurocognitive Characteristics of Diffuse Gliomas in Adolescent and Young Adults: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: Background Diffuse gliomas are the most frequent neoplasms in adolescent and young adults (AYAs), especially high-grade gliomas, which have the highest mortality rate. Recent histo-molecular advances are in favour of specialized therapeutic management of AYA patients, which we have analysed in this comprehensive review of the literature. Summary A literature search was conducted to identify all studies concerning diffuse gliomas and AYAs (15-39 years). We assessed epidemiology, clinical and imaging findings, h… Show more

“…Currently, the marginally effective approach to extending life expectancy in glioma patients involves surgical resection, complemented by radiation and chemotherapy using temozolomide. Despite these interventions, tumor recurrence is common, typically within 6.9 months, leading to a median survival time of only 12 to 15 months post-diagnosis [ 315 ]. Moreover, associating temozolomide with alfa interferon increases the overall survival in patients [ 316 ].…”

“…Children with CNS tumors represent the population most at risk of school difficulties with significantly lower levels of QOL [8,10,29,30]. Even before diagnosis, the symptoms caused by a CNS tumor can be severe, and potential neurological dysfunctions can affect the continuation of schooling.…”

“…Dear Editor, We have read with interest the paper "Clinico-radiohisto-molecular and neurocognitive characteristics of diffuse gliomas in adolescent and young adults: a comprehensive review" by Roux et al [1], recently accepted for publication in your journal. We believe this is a muchneeded, extensive, and detailed review on the features of diffuse gliomas in the specific population of adolescents and young adults (AYA).…”
