Clinico-microbiological profile of Burkholderia cepacia keratitis: a case series

Abstract: Background Burkholderia cepacia, an opportunistic pathogen mainly affecting patients with cystic fibrosis or immunocompromised, has rarely been documented as a cause of corneal infection. The clinical and microbiological profiles of B. cepacia keratitis are reported herein. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical record of 17 patients with culture-proven B. cepacia keratitis, treated between 2000 and 2019 at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Ta… Show more

“…Another study revealed that 'quorum sensing' (QS) enabled Burkholderia cepacia to produce virulent factors and biofilms, thus destroying the host's innate immunity, especially epithelial cells, neutrophils, and megaphagocytes in patients with cystic fibrosis (Ganesh et al, 2020). Similar results were observed in patients with keratitis (Ho et al, 2021). Wessels et al also reported that Burkholderia enriched the endometrium of symptomatic patients with pelvic pain but without endometriosis, as confirmed by surgery (Wessels et al, 2021).…”

“…Ultraviolet A light used to carry out corneal collagen cross-linking could cause or trigger reactivation of latent HSV in a patient without clinical symptoms[ 310 ]. HSK has been reported to predispose individuals to be affected by Burkholderia cepacia which usually affects people with cystic fibrosis or immunocompromised[ 311 ]. Montgomery et al [ 312 ] postulated that ocular glands could be affected by HSV infection or other bacterial infections of the cornea[ 312 ].…”
