Clinically relevant weakness in diverse populations of older adults participating in the International Mobility in Aging Study

Abstract: The aims of this study were to compare cut points for weakness proposed by Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Sarcopenia Project with cut points estimated with our own data; to assess the prevalence of clinically relevant handgrip strength (HGS) weakness according to published criteria across distinct populations of older adults; to estimate the ability of HGS weakness to identify slowness. This is a cross-sectional analysis of International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS) involving 1935 c… Show more

“…And other cross-sectional study was performed using International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS) involving 1935 community-dwelling older adults, between 65 and 74 years, who evaluated the hand GS (HGS) and gait speed assessment. [15] Weakness was defined according to sex-specific HGS cut points associated with slowness proposed by FNIH Sarcopenia Project. Weakness prevalence from Colombia and Brazil were 13.5 and 19.3% in women, respectively.…”

“…Grip strength thresholds for men ranged from 23.2 kg to 39.0 kg, and for women from 15.9 kg to 22.0 kg [86][87][88][89]. The British grip strength centiles [90] and their associated cut points accord with the definitions for sarcopenia and frailty across developed regions, but highlight the need for different cut points in developing regions [75].…”

“…As práticas de cuidados dos idosos, muitas vezes, são realizadas por um conjunto de profissionais de saúde, entretanto as decisões de tratamentos e intervenções são feitas de forma isolada. Diante disso, faz-se necessário estabelecer padrões e medidas que possam ser entendidos e compartilhados pelos profissionais para que haja uma aproximação entre as práticas profissionais e os fundamentos teóricos propostos pelo Ministério da Saúde 39 .…”
