Clinical value of CYFRA 21.1, carcinoembryonic antigen, neurone-specific enolase, tissue polypeptide specific antigen and tissue polypeptide antigen in the diagnosis of lung cancer

Abstract: Of 184 patients, 87 were subsequently found to have intrathoracic malignancy, 93 were found to have benign lung disease and four were lost to follow-up.CYFRA 21.1 was the most efficient marker in differentiating benign from malignant disease, with a sensitivity of 54% and a positive predictive value of 96%. Thirty seven patients who had a negative bronchoscopy subsequently turned out to have malignant disease. Either CYFRA 21.1 or CEA was elevated in 26 (70%) of such patients. Multivariate analysis showed that… Show more

“…While high specificities were found (more than 90%) in our study, the sensitivities of those four tumor markers were unsatisfactory (less than 30%), which was consistent with other studies. [23][24][25][26] However, it appeared that the sensitivities of tumor markers were lower than those reported by others (7.4-24.1 vs. 25.5-66.5%). 21,27 This might be the fact that the majority (67.4%) of lung cancer group were early-staged in our study.…”

“…The overexpression and elevated serum levels of phosphoglycerate kinase 1 are shown in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (35). Moreover, serum ENO2 is considered to be a prognostic factor in small cell lung, breast, and prostrate cancer (36)(37)(38)(39). Finally, PKM2 seems to be a more sensitive marker than conventional tumor markers such as CEA and CA72-4 for the post-operative surveillance of gastrointestinal cancer (40)(41)(42)(43)(44).…”

“…Similar studies have shown that increasing the number of samplings (repeated sampling in several sessions) significantly increases the sensitivity of mRNA biomarkers [29] [30]. This indicates that the odds of detecting markers are lower in a single sampling.…”

“…In this study, we evaluated the expression of CEA mRNA and MUC1 mRNA in [29]. A number of nonsmall cell lung cancer patients who are recognized in primary stages of the disease and undergo surgery die due to tumor recurrence, which shows presence of undetectable metastasis at the time of surgery.…”
