Stroke and cognitive impairment are common in older population. They often occur together and their combined effects significantly increase disability in both basic (BADLs) and instrumental (IADLs) activities of daily living. We investigated the individual and combined impacts of stroke and cognitive impairment on BADLs and IADLs. A total of 3331 community-dwelling older adults were enrolled from the Taiwan longitudinal study on aging in 2011. Both BADLs and IADLs were analyzed. Combination of stroke and cognitive impairment increased severity of ADL disabilities, but similar prevalence, similar numbers of summed BADL and IADL tasks with disability, and similar levels of difficulty for each BADL and IADL task were found between the stroke group and cognitive impairment group. The former had more difficult in dressing while the latter had more difficult in using the telephone, transport, and managing finances. A hierarchy of ADLs was also observed in all groups. ADL skill training supplemented with cognitive and physical interventions should focus on secondary prevention of dementia and improve motor functional capacity to reduce loss of ADLs.

Background and objectives: The ability to perform instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) is important for maintaining independent living, and optimal health-related quality of life and well-being. Neuropsychological measures are predictors of IADL ratings. The aims of the present study were to measure ability to perform IADL in patients with cancer and to explore the relationship between IADL and neuropsychological functioning. Methods: We evaluated IADL in 182 patients with four different types of cancer (thyroid, colorectal, breast and prostate cancer) and examined the relationship between IADL and neuropsychological functioning 6 months after chemotherapy treatment. Results: Our results showed that patients with breast cancer had significantly greater difficulty in performing IADL compared to patients with other types of cancer. There were no differences in IADL performance among the other three study groups. In addition, we found that neuropsychological score was a predictor of IADL; the greater the patients' disability, the lower their performance on neuropsychological measures. This is in accordance with the literature that suggests neuropsychological measures to be predictors of IADL ratings. Conclusions: The present findings are important because, although many researchers have studied the relationship between IADL and neuropsychological functioning in cancer, few studies have investigated IADL in different types of cancer. Optimal neuropsychological functioning is connected with better ability with regard to IADL.

Introduction Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative tauopathy associated with repetitive head impacts (RHI) typically sustained by contact sport athletes. Post‐translation modifications to tau in CTE have not been well delineated or compared to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods We measured phosphorylated tau epitopes within dorsolateral frontal cortex from post mortem brains with neither CTE nor AD (n = 108), CTE (n = 109), AD (n = 223), and both CTE and AD (n = 33). Results Levels of hyperphosphorylated tau (p‐tau)202, p‐tau231, and p‐tau396 were significantly increased in CTE. Total years of RHI exposure was significantly associated with increased p‐tau202 levels (P = .001), but not p‐tau396. Instead, p‐tau396 was most closely related to amyloid beta (Aβ)1‐42 levels (P < .001). The p‐tau202:p‐tau396 ratio was significantly increased in early and late CTE compared to AD. Discussion In frontal cortex, p‐tau202 is the most upregulated p‐tau species in CTE, while p‐tau396 is most increased in AD. p‐tau202 and p‐tau396 measurements may aid in developing biomarkers for disease.
