Clinical Usefulness of the Platelet-to Lymphocyte Ratio in Patients with Angiosarcoma of the Face and Scalp

Abstract: Angiosarcoma of the face and scalp (ASFS) is an extremely aggressive tumor that frequently metastasizes, often leading to death. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) are inflammatory markers that predict outcome of various cancers. We aimed to examine the relationship between pretreatment inflammatory markers and ASFS outcome. We included 17 patients with ASFS and a control group of 56 age- and gender-matched healthy individuals. T… Show more

“…Endothelial cell junctions are indispensable parts of the BBB and inner BRB (iBRB) in maintaining cerebral and retinal homeostasis [ 35 , 84 , 137 ]. Particularly, CNS tissues possess an enriched expression of tight junctions due to the need for maintenance of the blood barriers [ 84 ].…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the prognostic value of a set of pretreatment inflammatory indexes including NLR, PLR, MLR, SII, LDH and ALP, in a relatively large clinical setting of 56 patients with this rare sarcoma. There was only one study specifically targeting AS which evaluated the prognostic role of 3 serum markers in 17 patients with ASFS 20. The OS of AS patients at any location was relatively short21 and the major problem is the absence of treatment standards.…”

“…Owing to the extreme rarity of this tumor, reports on clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of primary angiosarcoma (PAS) are limited and most of them are case reports or small case series, of which the selection bias makes the results difficult to interpret. Gen Suzuk et al have investigated the role of 3 inflammatory markers in prognosis of 17 patients with AS 20. Our study aims to identify a set of accessible biomarkers in patients’ peripheral blood and clarify their relationships with the overall survival (OS).…”

“…52,54,55 In particular, the neutrophil count of angiosarcoma patients has been shown to be significantly higher than age and gender-matched controls. 56 In veterinary medicine, a higher pre-treatment neutrophil count is negatively correlated with prognosis in canine acute leukaemia 57 and a higher neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio has been shown to correlate negatively with prognosis in canine mast cell tumours. 58 Neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio has also been shown to have use in the differentiation of benign vs malignant canine soft tissue tumours.…”
