Clinical Use of Omniflow Vascular Graft as Arteriovenous Bridging Graft for Hemodialysis

Abstract: From April 1992 to November 1995, 109 bridging arteriovenous fistulas were performed in 89 patients for hemodialysis at National Taiwan University Hospital. These included 61 Omniflow vascular grafts (OVG) in 47 patients and 48 GoreTex polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts in 42 patients. There were 36 male and 53 female patients. whose ages ranged from 24 to 84 years with a mean of 59 2 2 years. The operation was performed under lidocaine local anesthesia with antibiotic prophylaxis. The anatomic configuratio… Show more

“…20 The Omniflow II Vascular Prosthesis (OVPII; Bio Nova International Pty Ltd, North Melbourne, VIC, Australia) is a collagen-polyester composite that has been successfully used for peripheral vascular replacement 21 and as an arteriovenous bridging graft for hemodialysis. 22,23 It is a truly integrated biosynthetic composite of polyester mesh and ovine connective tissue components. 24 OVPII is composed of a polyester net set on a silicon mandrel that is implanted on the sheep's back to form a tube of collagen that is fixed by glutaraldehyde at the moment of removal.…”

“…Furthermore, OVPII demonstrates excellent resistance to infection in AV access situations. [25][26][27] To date, no clear evidence is available that documents the type of VA that could be the best choice in complex patients.…”

“…Commercially, only biosynthetic vascular grafts are nowadays available, such as Omniflow (produced by Bionova but recently acquired by LeMaitre Vascular); Omniflow, sold now in an improved version, is a composite of crosslinked ovine collagen with a polyester mesh endoskeleton. The polyester mesh provides strength and durability, designed to resist aneurysm formation (Wang and Chu, ).…”
