Abstract: Constant awareness for new allergens, confirmed by critical evaluation, standardization of patch test materials, and the identification of temporal patterns and subgroups at risk will improve both the diagnosis and prevention of allergic contact dermatitis.

“…Other important cosmetic allergens include fragrances (fragrance mix), balsam of Peru (Myroxylon pereirae resin) and preservatives [e.g. methyldibromo glutaronitrile (MDBGN)] (3,16,17). In our subgroup, the frequency of sensitization to none of these allergens was higher than in the remainder of the IVDK patients.…”

“…Sensitizations to the fragrance mix and balsam of Peru were even slightly, but significantly, underrepresented. MDBGN has increasingly been used in the last decade in many cosmetics, not only in products intended for use on the scalp (17). As its use in leave‐on products – applied to sites other than the scalp – was banned by the European Union regulatory institutions only in March 2005 (Commission directive 2003/833/EC), it is not surprising that the sensitization frequency found in our collective did not differ from the remainder of the IVDK collective.…”

“…Weak haptens including dyes, preservatives, perfumes, metal ions, and drugs are the most frequently encountered haptens in humans (Saint-Mezard et al, 2004b;Uter et al, 2005). They can induce sensitization in a small proportion of individuals only and mostly those who frequently manipulate the hapten (occupational disease) (Buckley et al, 2002).…”

“…Contact allergy is an acquired immunological alteration resulting in allergic reactions of the skin (allergic contact dermatitis) after contact with a sufficient amount of the "allergen" in those who became sensitised (allergic) during an earlier exposure to the specific trigger. Allergens comprise natural as well as man-made substances and abound in the (work) environment [13]. However, those affected by allergic contact dermatitis only partly consult the medical system [14].…”
