Article history Canine distemper (CD) is a multisystemic and infectious disease caused by a Morbillivirus. The search for viral inclusions by mucosal cytology is a low cost and high practical alternative, which establishes the definitive diagnosis of CD, but is little reported in the literature. The objective was to encourage the use of mucosal cytopathology to identify Sinegaglia-Lentz corpuscles in the veterinary routine as an alternative or complementary to blood screening, providing a selection of photographs of the viral inclusions. Selected were 16 dogs with classic systemic or neurological disorders and positive for the chromatographic immunoassay for CD. Samples of the conjunctival, nasal and genital epithelium were collected with the aid of a sterile swab for making slides. Whole blood was also collected to make a blood smear. The slides were stained with a fast panoptic and observed by optical microscopy to directly search for eosinophilic viral inclusions, at 40 and 100x magnification. Sinegaglia-Lentz corpuscles were detected in nine of the 16 dogs (56.25%), five in conjunctival mucosa (41.65%), three in nasal mucosa (25%), one in genital mucosa (8.33%) and three in blood smear (25%). It is concluded that mucosa cytopathology, especially conjunctival, for Sinegaglia-Lentz research is an auxiliary tool for the early and definitive diagnosis of canine distemper. However, the absence of viral inclusions in these samples does not rule out the possibility of the disease.

Elderly dogs are steadily increasing worldwide as well as veterinarians’ and owners’ interest in their health and wellness. Aging is not a disease, but a combination of changes negatively affecting the organism in general and the immune system in particular, resulting in a decline in protection over time. The aim of this study was to measure the specific serum antibody titers against the main dangerous and widespread viral diseases preventable by core vaccinations in senior and geriatric dogs using the in-practice test VacciCheck. A cohort of three hundred fifty elderly dogs was analyzed for Protective Antibody Titers (PATs) against CPV-2, CDV and CAdV-1. The age ranged from 5 to 19 years, with two hundred fifty-eight seniors (73.7%) and ninety-two geriatrics (26.3%), and 97.4% of them were vaccinated at least once in their lives. More than half of the entire study population (52.9%) had PATs simultaneously for all three diseases, with 80.5% seniors and 19.5% geriatrics. Specific PATs were found in 88.6% of aging dogs for CPV-2, 82.3% for CadV-1 and 66.0% for CDV, demonstrating that unprotected aging dogs represent a minority. Unexpectedly, the larger elderly dogs resulted as more protected than smaller ones for CPV-2. Protection then decreases over time, with geriatric dogs less protected than senior ones. Veterinary practitioners should therefore always consider whether to maintain core vaccinations in aging dogs as in adults on a three-year basis or opt instead for closer boosters (every 1 or 2 years). PATs for core vaccines could then represent a good biomarker of protection and their titration could become a standard of care, especially in such a sensitive period of the dogs’ life.

The canine distemper virus (CDV) causes a persistent infection within the central nervous system resulting in a progressive, multifocal demyelinating disease, and may also lead to gastrointestinal and/or respiratory signs. Due to the wide variety of clinical manifestations, determining the initial clinical manifestation of dogs with neurological CDV of different ages can be used to increase the index of suspicion of CDV, especially in triage. 44 dogs, aged 2-8 months, with clinical findings that suggest the presence of neurological CDV were used, and 38 of them were enrolled. The dogs were divided into 2 subgroups based on their age. Accordingly, dogs aged 2-4 months were included in Group 1 (n:16), and dogs aged 5-8 months were included in Group 2 (n:22). The body temperature of Group 1 was higher than that of the Group 2 (p3 lines) were prominent in both groups. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed dilated intestine segments. As a result, it was concluded that the evaluation of the initial clinical manifestation in combination with non-invasive imaging methods can be used to increase the index of suspicion of neurologic CDV before proceeding to laboratory analyses, especially in triage.
