Clinical Study on the Efficacy of O-(β-Hydroxyethyl) Rutoside (HR) in Varicosis of Pregnancy

Abstract: In a double-blind trial involving 69 patients, the effect of O-(beta-hydroxyethyl) rutoside (HR)* in the treatment of varicosis of pregnancy has been investigated. The number of patients subjectively improving in the active drug group was significantly greater than in the placebo group; patients receiving HR also showed a small but significant decrease in leg circumference. Throughout the eight-week period of the trial, there were only minimal side-effects and healthy babies were delivered with good Apgar-scor… Show more

“…Animals given H R showed a more homogeneous tissue perfusion as well as less oedema, suggesting reduction of capillary damage and thus a reduction of capillary permeability. These findings are consistent with previous data on the fluidity improving (Schmid-Schonbein et al, 1975) and the anti-oedemic effect of H R (Lund et al , 1970;McEwan & McArdle, 1971;Arturson et al, 1975;Bergstein, 1975).…”

“…Due to its good solubility in water, troxerutin is easily absorbed by the gastrointestinal system and exhibits effectively protective function without cytotoxicity on tissues. Clinically, troxerutin has been available in the treatment of phlebocholosis and hemorrhoidal disease because it dredges the blood vessel well, improves the microcirculation, and protects the endothelial cells [ 17 19 ]; in addition, troxerutin possesses potential efficacy in the treatment of diabetic mellitus and Alzheimer's disease partly via its antioxidant activity [ 20 , 21 ]. Recently, we find that troxerutin significantly reduced the damage of several tissues including the brain, liver, and kidney through ameliorating antioxidant level in D-galactose-induced aging mice [ 22 24 ] and, consequently, improved memory deficits via suppressing inflammatory response and oxidative stress [ 25 , 26 ].…”

“…Dentro de este contexto, Bergstein 27 realizó un ECA que comparó la eficacia del flebotónico oral O -(bhidroxietil) rutósido, con el placebo para el tratamiento de las venas varicosas durante el embarazo. En este estudio se demostró que el rutósido redujo significativamente la sintomatología asociada con las venas varicosas con un RR de 1.89 y un IC del 95% 1.11 a 3.22.…”
