Clinical study of quality of life of traumatic brain injury patients after decompressive craniectomy and related influencing factors

Abstract: Background: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients has been subject of debate for neurosurgeons since long time. Our goal in this study is to evaluate the quality of life of these patients and to look at the problem from their point of view. Methods: Quality of Life after Traumatic Brain injury (QOLIBRI) instrument is was applied to 105 TBI patients who performed DC. Age, gender, the mode of injury and level of education, time from TBI to DC, lowest GCS score post-injury, prese… Show more

“…The QOLIBRI instrument is applied in various settings in the area of TBI, from international research studies to clinical use [ 28 , 29 , 30 ] and rehabilitation [ 31 ]. Until now the QOLIBRI has been translated and validated in more than 26 languages and is widely used internationally for individuals after TBI [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 ].…”

“…There is limited literature regarding a patient’s perception of the cranioplasty process, potential difficulties with rehabilitation before/after cranioplasty and how this may impact their reintegration into the community. A study by Gopaul et al 21 used the QOLIBRI questionnaire in 105 TBI patients who had undergone a DC and showed that anxiety and depression along with changes in cognition were the most significant challenges faced, but it was noted that further qualitative research was warranted here to understand these results better.…”

“…El dilema ético consiste en determinar cuándo se debe de considerar un pronóstico funcional desfavorable después de un infarto maligno de la ACM [16][17][18] . Esto último debe de tomarse en cuenta, y más cuando las decisiones deben de tomarse con rapidez debido a la severidad de la patología 19 . Estudios realizados en pacientes que sobrevivieron a una craniectomía descompresiva evaluaron si estos pacientes se arrepentían de haber sido sometidos a la cirugía.…”
