Non-infectious diseases such as CHD and certain cancers have become major causes of death and disability in affluent countries. Probiotics (principally lactic acid bacteria; LAB) may assist in lowering the risk of these diseases. Experimental studies with probiotics have given generally inconclusive outcomes for infectious disease and for biomarkers for non-infectious disease. In part this situation may reflect their inability to colonise the adult human gut effectively. Prebiotics can assist in promoting colonisation, and resistant starch (RS), as a high-amylose starch, is a prebiotic and synbiotic. This starch exerts its synbiotic action through adhesion of the bacteria to the granule surface. Consumption of RS assists in recovery from infectious diarrhoea in man and animals. A rice porridge, high in RS, appears to modify the autochthonous porcine large-bowel microflora favourably through lowering Escherichia coli and coliform numbers. Many of the beneficial effects of RS on large-bowel function appear to beexerted through short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) formed by bacterial fermentation. In man LAB are found in relatively highest numbers in milk-fed infants where theprofile of fermentation products differs quite markedly from that in adults. It appearsunlikely that ingestion of current probiotics will alter either total SCFA or the proportions of the major acids. More emphasis needs to be given to the investigation of the effects of complex carbohydrates, including RS, on the autochthonous microflora of the human large bowel.

“…Consumption of pectin not only reduces metal toxicity from the body but also helps in reducing metal related inflammation, reducing cholesterol levels, removing artery plaque, eliminating arthritic pain and stiffness, eliminating constipation and diarrhea and regulating blood glucose levels (Jenkins et al, 1975(Jenkins et al, : 1977Fisher et al, 1966). Several recent clinical studies (Rabbani et al, 2001;Triplehorn and Millard, 2002) have demonstrated that oral pectin supplementation to children and infants reduce acute intestinal infections and significantly slow diarrhea. It is thought that this is due to the reduction of pathogenic bacteria such as Shigella, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Proteus and Citrobacter from intestine.…”

Pectin is a branched polysaccharide present widely in a variety of fruits. It has been of high interest to cancer biologists due to its involvement in metal/carcinogen detoxification and its anti-carcinogenic properties. In particular, Citrus Pectin (CP) and Modified Citrus Pectin (MCP) have been shown to have a significant inhibitory role in cancer cell metastasis, invasion, angiogenesis and survival. The interactions and inactivation of oncogenes by CP and MCP in prostate, breast, liver, lung, melanoma and multiple myeloma cancers suggest that CP and MCP could play an important role in cancer chemotherapy and chemoprevention. In this review, we focus on the biological function of pectin with respect to its properties, sources, structure and its potential role in carcinogen detoxification and cancer suppression.

Conclusion et application de la recherche : Les différentes variations observées des paramètres étudiés signifient que ceux-ci sont en modification perpétuelle durant la croissance du bananier plantain. C'est donc à ce titre que la modélisation de la croissance du bananier plantain, en utilisant les données expérimentales, peut être proposée comme une voie de solution pour la maitrise de la variabilité des paramètres dans les zones de production et pour deux types de traitement. ABSTRACT :Study of the growth plantain (Musa sp., AAB cultivar Horn 1) in the regions of Azaguié and Yamoussoukro (Cote d'Ivoire).Objectives : The objective of this work is to create a data base starting from the study of the growth of the plantain tree which can be used to create mathematical models making it possible to envisage this growth in real time and to pre-empt it.Methods and results : The growth study was conducted in two region of Côte d'Ivoire : Azaguié and Yamoussoukro. The results showed that the leaves number of the Azaguié region is higher than that of Yamoussoukro. Concerning the pseudo-stem height, the plantain trees of Yamoussoukro zone are higher than those of Azaguié.
