Clinical Significance of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor and HER2 Receptor in Resectable Gastric Cancer

Abstract: There is a wide variability in membranous EGFR levels and in cytosolic HER2 levels in gastric cancer, which seems to be related to the biological heterogeneity of these tumors. In addition, high tumor EGFR and HER2 levels were associated with an unfavorable outcome in patients with resectable gastric cancer.

“…In the past, high levels of EGFR were reported as a poor prognostic factor for overall survival (OS) in resectable gastric cancer patients who did not receive chemotherapy (Garcia et al, 2003;Galizia et al, 2007). In contrast, high levels of EGFR were reported as a positive prognostic factor in patient group who received 5-fluorouracil (FU)-containing chemotherapy (Al-Batran et al, 2008a;Matsubara et al, 2008a).…”

“…It has been shown that HER1 and HER2 expressions are involved in poor prognosis (Garcia et al, 2003;Nielsen et al, 2004;Tovey et al, 2004). Despite the numerous studies devoted to the issue of clinical significance of HER1 and HER2, the role of these receptors is still controversial in bladder cancer.…”
