Clinical significance of serum melatonin in predicting the severity of oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: Melatonin, the primary hormone produced by the pineal gland, is intensely assessed for its anticancer properties. This study aimed to reveal the clinical significance of serum melatonin levels in predicting the severity of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). For this purpose, 40 male patients with OSCC and 30 healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. The serum levels of melatonin were determined by ELISA. The results revealed that the melatonin concentrations were significantly lower in the patients with … Show more

“…In this study, median of serum MLT in OSCC patients amounted 13.01 pg/ml (95% CI: 10.08-15.14). These results signi cantly differ from those obtained by Stanciu et al in a study on serum MLT levels in OSCC patients [42]. This group of authors obtained high serum MLT levels at 7 a.m. in the healthy control group (median 47.6 pg/ml; interquartile range: 37.7-66.4; age 57 ± 7 years of age).…”

“…PTC + AIT patients had positive TgAb antibody titers. The exclusion criteria were as follows: (i) age under 18 years; (ii) acute infection, burning, pulmonary, hepatic or renal impairment; (iii) ongoing treatment with steroidal or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; (iv) ongoing treatment with antibiotics from the tetracycline group, especially doxycycline (known as MMP inhibitors) [ 19 ]. For each enrolled patient, a detailed medical and drug history was obtained.…”

“…The ROC curves were plotted using as a variable the value of MMP-9, TIMP-1, or MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio for patients admitted to the emergency department compared to the healthy controls, and as a classification criterion, the TBSA burn <25%. The AUC is an overall summary of diagnostic accuracy as follows: AUC >0.9, excellent diagnostic accuracy; AUC between 0.7 and 0.9, good diagnostic accuracy; AUC between 0.5 and 0.7, poor diagnostic accuracy; AUC <0.5, lack of diagnostic value of the biomarker (20). ROC curves have determined cut-off values for optimal sensitivity and specificity.…”
