“…The percentage of patients with lymph node micrometastasis among those with pN0 ESCC ranges from 17% [13] to 55.5% [12]. Our results showed that 26.4% of patients had micrometastases as determined by anticytokeratin antibody (AE1/AE3).…”

“…As more sections are cut from tissue blocks, more micrometastasis might be found in the lymph nodes. However, the lowest positive rate (17%) was reported when ®ve sections per node were analyzed [13] and the highest positive rate (55.5%) was reported when only one section was assessed [12]. A study using a speci®c antiepithelial cell antibody, Ber-Ep4, yielded a high positive rate of 50% in ESCC and micrometastasis was found even in patient with carcinoma in situ (Tis) [9].…”

“…It should also be noted that this study analysed only conventional histological factors and did not consider the potential prognostic significance of lymph node micrometastases. Several immunohistochemical studies have shown that up to 50 per cent of all patients diagnosed with N0 disease on routine histological examination have lymph node micrometastases, and this finding is associated with an increased rate of local recurrence 11,12,21 .…”

“…Similarly, in patients with advanced cancer, distant lymph nodes should be removed if LNM is found in regional lymph nodes. In patients with carcinoma of the oesophagus and stomach, the reported prognosis was worse in those with LNM (35,(41)(42)(43)(44).…”
