Clinical significance of fecal calprotectin for the early diagnosis of abdominal type of Henoch–Schonlein purpura in children

Abstract: The objective of this study is to explore the value of fecal calprotectin (FC) for early screening of the abdominal type of Henoch-Schonlein purpura (AHSP) in children. The study cohort included 40 children with AHSP treated at Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University from November 2014 to November 2015, and 40 children hospitalized in the Division of Pediatric Orthopedics in the corresponding period were selected as a control group. Fresh fecal samples were collected in the acute phase of the first visi… Show more

“…Considering that fecal calprotectin is a marker of intestinal inflammation, there may be no association in cases with only kidney or joint involvement without gastrointestinal involvement. Furthermore, in another study by Teng et al, only the association of fecal calprotectin with gastrointestinal involvement was reported [20]. Finally, in our study, the cut-off fecal calprotectin level for identifying gastrointestinal involvement was 69.10 mg/kg, which was much lower than the value reported by Teng et al (264.5 mg/kg) [20].…”

Finally, in our study, the cut-off fecal calprotectin level for identifying gastrointestinal involvement was 69.10 mg/kg, which was much lower than the value reported by Teng et al (264.5 mg/kg) [20]. Interestingly, this value was similar to the cut-off level for identifying lower gastrointestinal involvement in our study (277.5 mg/kg).…”

“…Similarly to our case, recent studies demonstrate that fecal calprotectin can be elevated in acute phases of gastrointestinal involvement in HSP. Therefore, it has been proposed as a marker for early diagnosis of GI involvement in HSP ( 15 , 16 ).…”

“…Categorical parameters are demonstrated as frequency (percentage) and continuous parameters are demonstrated as the mean ± SD. Categorical parameters were analyzed using the χ 2 test or the Fisher's exact test (14) and continuous parameters were analyzed using the Wilcoxon sum rank test or the Mann-Whitney U test. P<0.05 was considered to indicate a statistically significant difference.…”
