Clinical Results After 5% Sodium Chloride Treatment in Post-operative Corneal Oedema

Abstract: Background: Evaluate the effectiveness of a hyperosmolar 5% sodium chloride treatment in corneal oedema.Design: This prospective, randomized study was conducted in a universitary ophthalmology department setting.Participants: 95 patients with post-operative corneal oedema were separated in 2 groups: 45 patients in group 1 treated with hypertonic eye drops; 50 patients in group 2 without anti-oedematous. Methods:Patients in group 1 were treated with 5% sodium chloride hypertonic eye drops associated with 0.15% … Show more

“…Last but not least, another PHC session can be taken up later if the media does not permit further laser, which can be an added challenge. Two studies reported the effect of topical hypertonic saline on corneal edema without bullous keratopathy 4,5 Topical ocular hypertonic solutions act by increasing the tear film osmolality which in turn facilitates movement of sub-epithelial and intra-stromal fluid out of the cornea by osmosis. 6 The safety and efficacy of glycerine (5%) as a topical hypertonic agent in reducing corneal edema have been established.…”
