Clinical, Research, and Public Health Implications of Poor Measurement of Vitamin D Status

Abstract: There is widespread concern about the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency amid evidence to support that such a state may increase the risk of a wide range of adverse health outcomes. Estimating the prevalence of deficiency, as well as establishing links to health outcomes, requires the accurate and precise measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in serum or plasma. Accurate measurement of 25(OH)D underlies the definitions of vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency and, thus, prevalence es… Show more

“…Amongst subjects with data on SNPs and vitamin D level (1343 in total), 320 women (165 cases, 155 control subjects) were also subjects in the cardiovascular cohort. There is no consensus regarding adequate levels of vitamin D, and the levels vary substantially over the year; thus it is not possible to clinically define a high or low vitamin D level on a single measurement [ 20 ]. In this study, the median level of vitamin D of each calendar month of sampling was used as a cut-off between low and high levels of vitamin D.…”

“…Although the importance of vitamin D has been recognized in recent years, there is no clear consensus on the definition of VDD [ 51 , 52 , 53 ]. Generally, vitamin D supplementation is recommended for pregnant women and newborns [ 54 ].…”

“…Usually, the validation of new 25-vitamin D assays is done through the comparison with HPLC results. [5][6][7] However, the CKD population is either not well represented or excluded from these studies. 2,4,[8][9][10] In this study, we investigated the impact of various stages of CKD on the variability between two chemiluminescence assays for 25-vitamin D.…”
