Clinical relevance of vitamin B12 level and vitamin B12 metabolic gene variation in pulmonary tuberculosis

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the association of vitamin B12 level and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in vitamin B12 metabolic genes with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in Chinese Han population. The plasma vitamin B12 expression level was detected using ELISA. Ten SNPs in six key genes (TCN1, TCN2, CUBN, MMACHC, FUT6, and MUT) of vitamin B12 metabolic pathway were included for genotyping by the SNPscan technique among 454 PTB patients and 467 controls. Our results found that vitamin B12 level was … Show more

“…On the other hand, the role of the upregulation of TCN2, a protein involved in vitamin B12 metabolism, is not clear ( 97 ). However, a recent study shows that B12 levels are significantly decreased in patients with tuberculosis infections ( 98 ), underlying a potential avenue of future research in bacterial infections.…”

“…The initiation of antiretroviral medication has been proven to influence patients' vitamin B-12 levels. Most investigations on vitamin B-12 status focus on late-stage disease exacerbated by factors such as tuberculosis, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and others [182][183][184][185][186][187]. Given the overlapping of HIV-1 infection and vitamin B-12 insufficiency, early detection and treatments are needed to prevent permanent damage.…”
