Clinical relevance of cagA and vacA gene polymorphisms in Helicobacter pylori isolates from Senegalese patients

Abstract: The molecular epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori in Africa is poorly documented. From January 2007 to December 2008, we investigated 187 patients with gastric symptoms in one of the main tertiary hospitals in Dakar, Senegal. One hundred and seventeen patients were culture-positive for H. pylori. Polymorphisms in vacA and cagA status were investigated by PCR; the 3'-region of cagA was sequenced, and EPIYA motifs were identified. Bacterial heterogeneity within individuals was extensively assessed by using an ap… Show more

“…In one study the prevalence of cagA gene was 48.7%, lower than other reports in African countries (17) and was present in 73.3% of isolates (6) . In patient positives for H. pylori in gastric biopsies, the cagA gene was detected in 43.3% of gastric biopsies, in 43.8% of saliva samples, and in 27.3% of dental plaque samples, noting that dental plaque and saliva can serve as temporary storage for the cagA variant H. pylori in individuals with gastric disease (34) .…”

“…Recent data also demonstrates the influence of Helicobacter pylori virulence factors on clinical and endoscopic disease in an endemic region like sub-Saharan Africa [10]. Here, for the first time we present data on characterization of H. pylori cagA and vacA genotypes and their association with gastro-duodenal disease in Ghanaian patients.…”

“…H. pylori was cultured and identified as previously described [19]. A single H. pylori colony from the antrum or fundus was chosen and subcultured from a primary growth.…”
