The follow-up of squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) allows us to understand their progression and regression, however squamous cell atypia (ASC) can generate confusing follow-up results. We aimed to describe the evolution of ASC and SIL during cyto-histopathological follow-up in a tertiary-care hospital.Materials and methods: we conducted a retrospective study during 2016 in 156 Papanicolaou test (PAP) results under three models: 1) with ≥1 PAP and biopsies, 2) 1 PAP followed by ≥1 biopsy, and 3) ≥1 PAP and a confirmatory biopsy. Progression was defined as ASCUS to low-grade SIL (LSIL) or higher, and LSIL to high-grade SIL (HSIL) or higher; and regression as HSIL to LSIL or lower; and LSIL to ASCUS or lower. Results:In PAP, 57 (36.5%) cases were ASC and in histopathology 56 (39.9%) cases of grade 1 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Twenty-nine (18.6%) results were followed: 8 (27.6%), 17 (58.6%), and 4 (13.8%) with models 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The progression of the lesions was reported in ~50% for models 2 and 3. ASCUS was the main cytological finding that indicated biopsies, and for all models, the mean progression and regression time was 4 and 3.1 months, respectively. Conclusions:The follow-up of cytological alterations in three models showed progression of lesions in half of the cases analyzed with a time of four months of evolution; ASCUS was the main finding that indicated histopathological study.

BACKGROUND: The production of many molecular markers at different grades of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia is currently being studied to predict the outcome of the disease and build an individual prognosis. However, no clear criteria for the course of neoplasia are available at this time. AIM: This study aimed to assess the efficiency of the antiviral immunomodulator Allokin-alpha (Alloferon) in the treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia of moderate severity from the perspective of long-term follow-up. DESIGN: Prospective study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 86 women of reproductive age with grade II cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN II) associated with human papillomavirus (HPV). In the CIN II group, all patients underwent excision of the affected area. According to the study design, 43 women were followed up after excision (Group 1a), while 43 participants were treated surgically and used the study drug (Group 1b). By cytological and colposcopic examination, the efficiency of the chosen therapy was assessed after 3, 12, and 18 months. However, the main criteria for the efficiency of treatment were the absence of HPV or a decrease in the viral load below significant values and the absence of recurrence of the pathological process. RESULTS: The combination of excision and the use of Allokin-alpha (Alloferon) showed significant advantages over monosurgical treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The data obtained indicate high HPV elimination and reduced probability of recurrence after excisional treatment in patients with CIN II when using Allokin-alpha (Alloferon).

Introduction: News media play an important role in raising public awareness, framing public opinions, affecting policy formulation, and acknowledgment of public health issues. Traditional qualitative content analysis for news sentiments and focuses are time-consuming and may not efficiently convey sentiments nor the focuses of news media. Methods: We used descriptive statistics and state-of-art text mining to conduct sentiment analysis and topic modeling, to efficiently analyze over 3 million Reuters news articles during 2007–2017 for identifying their coverage, sentiments, and focuses for public health issues. Based on the top keywords from public health scientific journals, we identified 10 major public health issues (i.e., “air pollution,” “alcohol drinking,” “asthma,” “depression,” “diet,” “exercise,” “obesity,” “pregnancy,” “sexual behavior,” and “smoking”). Results: The news coverage for seven public health issues, “Smoking,” “Exercise,” “Alcohol drinking,” “Diet,” “Obesity,” “Depression,” and “Asthma” decreased over time. The news coverage for “Sexual behavior,” “Pregnancy,” and “Air pollution” fluctuated during 2007–2017. The sentiments of the news articles for three of the public health issues, “exercise,” “alcohol drinking,” and “diet” were predominately positive and associated such as “energy.” Sentiments for the remaining seven public health issues were mainly negative, linked to negative terms, e.g., diseases. The results of topic modeling reflected the media’s focus on public health issues. Conclusions: Text mining methods may address the limitations of traditional qualitative approaches. Using big data to understand public health needs is a novel approach that could help clinical and translational science awards programs focus on community-engaged research efforts to address community priorities.
