Clinical practice guidelines for the surgical treatment of rectal cancer: a consensus statement of the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncologists (HeSMO)

Abstract: In rectal cancer management, accurate staging by magnetic resonance imaging, neo-adjuvant treatment with the use of radiotherapy, and total mesorectal excision have resulted in remarkable improvement in the oncological outcomes. “…From December 2016 to February 2021, 94 consecutive patients treated at the Department of Medical Oncology, University Hospital of Heraklion were evaluated for participation in this study. Inclusion criteria were: I) Patients with radiologic evidence of mCRC documented by computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) presenting measurable disease treated with first line systemic treatment according to the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncologists (HeSMO) guidelines (20), II) Patients with radiologic evidence of laRC, documented by abdominal and chest CT and abdominal and pelvic MRI presenting measurable disease and receiving induction chemotherapy according to the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncologists (HeSMO) guidelines (21).
