Clinical physiotherapists had both positive and negative perceptions about delivering two different interventions in a clinical trial: a mixed methods study

Abstract: Clinical physiotherapists had both positive and negative perceptions about delivering two different interventions in a clinical trial. However, they were all interested in participating in future research, suggesting that the positive aspects outweighed the negative.

“…whereas the negative aspects included the observation that the design of studies was not always reflective of usual clinical practice (Bampton et al, 2012). In the present study, the PTs were involved in the planning and partly designed the intervention themselves, which could contribute to a positive attitude towards being involved in a research project.…”

“…Both positive and negative perceptions about involvement in the research process have previously been reported by PTs involved in delivering the intervention in a randomized trial (Bampton et al, ). The positive aspects included “a way of providing evidence for practice,” whereas the negative aspects included the observation that the design of studies was not always reflective of usual clinical practice (Bampton et al, ). In the present study, the PTs were involved in the planning and partly designed the intervention themselves, which could contribute to a positive attitude towards being involved in a research project.…”

“…Four mixed methods studies were included and were judged to meet the protocol's inclusion criteria for the population of interest (16, 17,26,32). Only two studies used an intervention which would meet the protocol's inclusion criteria of engagement in research (16,17). None of the four studies used a study type incorporated within the protocol's inclusion criteria; however, these studies were included following the decision to broaden the inclusion criteria (16, 17,26,32).…”

None of the four studies used a study type incorporated within the protocol's inclusion criteria; however, these studies were included following the decision to broaden the inclusion criteria (16, 17,26,32). Out of these four mixed methods studies, three studies were judged to be of high quality (16, 17, 32) and one was judged to be of low quality (26).…”
