Clinical performance of removable dental prostheses in the moderately reduced dentition: a systematic literature review

Abstract: Within the limitations of this study, it would be correct to state that removable dental prostheses, given suitable pretreatment and follow-up regimes, can provide satisfactory solutions. Based on only one paper, they revealed acceptable results even over a very long observation period (25 years).

“…The frequently assumed negative impact of PRDPs 12 is probably overestimated, at least for the PRDP type we used. Data on the prognosis of teeth in dental arches provided with PRDPs and success and survival rates of PRDPs are available 13‐15 but difficult to relate to those of alternative treatments. Only RCTs can bridge this knowledge gap because different treatments are mostly associated with different clinical baseline conditions in nonrandomised trials.…”

“…constructed from polyoxymethylene (POM), also the PEEK and polyetherketonketon (PEKK) have been used to enhance the esthetic of metal direct retainer assemblies of RPD [4]. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a synthetic, tooth colored polymeric material that has been used as a biomaterial in orthopedics for many years [5,6]. PEEK can be used for patients allergic to metals, or who dislike the metallic taste, and the unpleasant metal display of the denture framework and retentive clasps [7].…”

“…Edentulism and severe tooth loss affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide and compromises the normal mastication process, phonetics, and overall aesthetics [ 1 ]. Clinically, removable dental prostheses (RDPs) have been widely applied to replace the lost teeth and reestablish oral functions [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. RDPs with attachment system exhibit superior clinical performance, due to improved stability (resistance to horizontal forces) and retention (resistance to vertical dislodgement) [ 5 , 6 ].…”
