Clinical Parameters in T1N0M0 Lower Lip Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: This retrospective study was carried out to asses the clinical outcome of T1 (i.e., tumor 2 cm or less at greatest dimension) squamous cell carcinoma of the lower lip (SCCLL) and verify the impact of some clinical parameters on prognosis. Fifty-seven patients with histologically proven T1 SCCLL were analyzed. Fifty-two patients were never treated before admission, whereas five (8.8%) had a second radical resection of the primary tumor location; none had neck nodes (i.e., N0) or distant metastasis (i.e., M0). T… Show more

“…In our study, local control was achieved in 87 of 89 patients (97.7%) with Stage T1 or T2 carcinoma of the lip. It seems, therefore, that HDR-BT is at least as effective as LDR-BT in early stage disease and is an excellent option compared with surgery (22,23). Our present study also included locally advanced tumors.…”

“…Surgery and radiation therapy (RT) have shown good results, and can be used indistinctly . Some surgical series present high relapse rates, up to nearly 40%, whereas other early T1N0 tumors have a 0% relapse rate . The treatment choice depends on the service that refers the patient, along with the experience and protocols established in each hospital.…”

“…Some causes such as exposure to ultraviolet light, smoking, radiotherapy, and genetic factors are held responsible for its etiology (2)(3)(4). Because it can be easily noticed because of its localization, patients can be detected in earlier stages compared with patients having other head and neck tumors.…”

“…In cases without neck metastasis, elective neck dissection is performed. However, in literature, there is no consensus about which cases need elective neck dissection (3)(4)(5). In this study, it was aimed to investigate the place of elective neck dissection in patients with kT1 and kT2 lower lip cancer.…”
