Clinical Outcomes of Zirconia Dental Implants: A Systematic Review

Abstract: To determine the survival rate and marginal bone loss (MBL) of zirconia dental implants restored with single crowns or fixed dental prostheses. An electronic search was conducted up to November 2015 (without any restriction regarding the publication time) through the databases MEDLINE (PubMed), Cochrane Library, and EMBASE to identify randomized controlled clinical trials and prospective clinical trials including >15 patients. Primary outcomes were survival rate and MBL. Furthermore, the influence of several c… Show more

“…However, zirconia implants that were restored with veneered zirconia displayed a severe chipping rate of the restorations between 42.8 and 62% for single crowns and FDPs after an observation period of 5 years 5) . Another study reported chipping fractures of the veneering ceramic of zirconia in 9.1% of the investigated posterior single crowns after an observation period of 1 year 23) .…”

“…Implants made from zirconia may be considered as a promising metal free alternative to the well-established titanium implants [1][2][3][4][5][6] . Compared to the natural tooth with its periodontal ligament, the implant-bone interface is rigid.…”

“…For patients opposing metals, oral implants made from polycrystalline zirconium dioxide represent the only nowadays available alternative [2]. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 , zirconia) presents the phenomenon of allotropy, characterized by temperature-dependent crystal structures [3].…”

“…To date, not only the restoration but also the implant can be fabricated out of a ceramic material, allowing for a completely metal-free approach Oral implants made from yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) proved to be reliable in prospective clinical evaluations with an outcome comparable to titanium implants [8].…”
