Clinical Outcomes of Surgically Managed Ectopic Ureters in 33 DogsS

Abstract: Factors that predict postoperative continence and incontinence were evaluated in 33 female dogs with surgically corrected ectopic ureters. The current study found that intramural or extramural, left- or right-sided, and unilateral or bilateral ectopic ureters were not significant factors influencing postoperative incontinence in affected dogs. The presence of either hydroureter or urinary tract infection was also not significantly associated with postoperative incontinence. Dogs with ectopic ureters that were … Show more

“…CT scanning and cystoscopy are reported to be the most useful techniques for diagnosis of EUs. However, contrast-enhanced CT is the most noninvasive useful than other imaging techniques, as the site of ureteral termination can be easily diagnosed (Ho et al, 2011). In this case, contrast radiography and abdominal ultrasonography were opted and EU was diagnosed.…”

“…Incontinence may persist if the ectopic ureter is located intramurally because of disruption of the proximal urethra and internal urethral sphincter mechanism. 69 It seems that dogs are more likely to be continent with this procedure than with surgical correction. In patients in which the kidney cannot be spared because of hydronephrosis or pyelonephritis, nephroureterectomy can be performed.…”
