Clinical Outcomes after Hepatitis C Infection from Contaminated Anti-D Immune Globulin

Abstract: Most of the women with HCV infection 17 years after receiving HCV-contaminated anti-D immune globulin had evidence of slight or moderate hepatic inflammation on liver biopsy, about half had fibrosis, and 2 percent had probable or definite cirrhosis.

“…Even when a large number of persons have been accidentally infected by the same viral inoculum, some recover while others develop viral persistence. 5,6 In addition, recovery from HCV infection occurs more often in Caucasians than African Americans, even after adjusting for environmental and viral factors. 7 Some host genetic polymorphisms in the human leukocyte antigen complex have been associated with HCV recovery.…”

“…The risk of serious illness from liver disease increases with age [2]. There are few longitudinal studies on HCV-induced liver fibrosis with established time-point of HCV exposure, and the great majority have been performed among patients infected through medical procedures such as transfusions and medical injections with infected syringes or sera containing HCV [3][4][5][6][7]. In Western countries the main cause of HCV-infection has been the use of contaminated syringes and needles among IDUs.…”
