Clinical Outcome Measures for Lateropulsion Poststroke: An Updated Systematic Review

Abstract: The BLS is recommended for identifying contraversive lateropulsion. The scale assesses the presence of contraversive lateropulsion across several functional tasks, from rolling to walking, and is the only scale originally written in English. The BLS is the only tool to receive ratings greater than poor for reliability and responsiveness. The BLS should be implemented as soon as contraversive lateropulsion is suspected to guide frontline clinicians' initial plan of care, allow objective identification of change… Show more

“…There is limited research about the measurement and rehabilitation of individuals with lateropulsion following stroke. Measurement scales have primarily been used to assess postural control in this patient population (Koter et al, 2017). While force platforms are considered the gold standard for measuring postural control in various clinical groups, these are not readily available within the clinical environment.…”

“…To date, most interventions for reducing pushing symptoms have emphasized subjective postural vertical training with visual feedback (Koter et al, 2017;Paci et al, 2009). However, throughout the training in this study, the patients were encouraged to understand the mismatch between the true visual vertical and their own incorrect sense of their body's relation to gravity.…”

“…However, we used the Scale for Contraversive Pushing, because it is the most popular examination tool that is quick and simple to use with the highest reliability and validity (Baccini et al, 2008;Koter et al, 2017). The…”

“…4,5,11 Two commonly referred-to scales have been validated to evaluate PB: the Burke Lateropulsion Scale (BLS) and the Scale for Contraversive Pushing (SCP). 2,[13][14][15][16] However, both scales have their limitations. The BLS takes up to 10 minutes to complete, 4 which may discourage busy clini cians from its use.…”
