Clinical Observations from a Breast Cancer Registry in Asian Women

Abstract: This study supports what has been observed among breast cancer patients in this region and reflects a profile of breast cancer that differs from that seen in the West: patients present at a younger age, with more advanced stage and fewer estrogen-positive tumors. Most women in our series received systemic adjuvant therapy, and the 5-year overall survival rates are equivalent to published results from the West. The unique features of the disease in women in Singapore are important to recognize, as they may infl… Show more

“…The present 10 years data report of INMOL shows that 58% of patients presented at these late stages. A similar picture has been reported in various other studies from Pakistan (Malik, 2002;Hanif et al, 2007;Aziz et al, 2008;Khokher et al, 2010;Malik et al, 2010) and other developing countries (Chopra, 2001;Hebert et al, 2006;El Saghir et al, 2007;Lim et al, 2007).The stage wise distribution of breast cancer patients is far better in the developed Asian countries. Only 10% patients in Hong Kong and 27% in Malaysia had advanced disease at presentation (Agarwal et al, 2007).…”

“…Historically low rates of breast cancer in, for example, the Eastern World have shown a rapid increase in recent years [3,4] . Although typically a disease of later life, breast cancer among younger, pre-menopausal women appears to be more common than in the Western World [5,6] . Breast cancer among young women, although comprising only around 7% of diagnosed cases, is associated with later presentation, high grade tumors, hormone receptor negativity and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression; factors that lead to a poorer overall prognosis [7] .…”

“…This is sometimes called "de novo" metastatic disease, meaning from the beginning according to data taken from the United States (DeSantis et al, 2011). However, data from Asian countries suggest the rate to be much higher, approaching 10% to 25% (Chopra et al, 2001;Tan et al, 2005;Yip et al, 2006;Lim et al, 2007). In addition, Asian patients present with larger metastatic tumours and often involve multiple metastatic sites (Agarwal et al, 2007).…”
