Clinical observation of biomimetic mineralized collagen artificial bone putty for bone reconstruction of calcaneus fracture

Abstract: This study investigated clinical outcomes of biomimetic mineralized collagen artificial bone putty for bone reconstruction in the treatment of calcaneus fracture. Sixty cases of calcaneal fractures surgically treated with open reduction and internal fixation in our hospital from June 2014–2015 were chosen and randomly divided into two groups, including 30 cases treated with biomimetic mineralized collagen artificial bone putty as treatment group, and 30 cases treated with autogenous ilia as control group. “…For instance, mineralized collagen with a bone-like nanostructure has been utilized in the treatment of bone defects caused by traumatic injury, tumors, surgical wounds etc. 106 , 107 , 347 Mineralized collagen exhibits several functional advantages over traditional synthetic materials, including better biomechanics, osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties, and biodegradation. More importantly, the clinical efficacy of mineralized collagen mixed with bone marrow closely resembles autologous bone, which is currently the gold-standard treatment for large bone defects.…”

“…Nevertheless, post-operative complications in iliac bone donor sites have been reported. 7 Less common complications after said surgery include severe events such as peritoneal perforation, urethral injuries, and retroperitoneal hematoma. More common complications after said surgery include nerve damage, hematoma, hernia, 8 and donor site pain, the last of which is the most prevalent complication.…”

“…Nano-hydroxyapatite/collagen (nHAC) is an artificial bone repair material developed in recent years [6]. It is a three-dimensional porous bone tissue engineering scaffold material composed of nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) and type I collagen (COL), which features a chemical composition and microstructure similar to the human body's natural bone matrix [7].…”
