Clinical intuition in the nursing process and decision‐making—A mixed‐studies review

Abstract: We find that intuition plays a key role in more or less all of the steps in the nursing process as a base for decision-making that supports safe patient care, and is a validated component of nursing clinical care expertise.

“…Factors found to be important in this review to unconscious or intuitive decision‐making are also previously identified in the literature. Similar to the findings in this review, unconscious decision‐making processes involve more than just a nurse's feeling about a patient and can include factors such as identification of patterns (Melin‐Johansson, Palmqvist, & Ronnberg, ). Decision support that facilitates identification of patterns to help less experienced nurses make decisions may be more similar to nurses with enough experience to see patterns among patients.…”

“…Situation awareness also led to nurse perceptions of how a patient will progress during their hospital admission (Tower et al, 2012). The predictive factors in decision-making have been linked to intuition in nursing literature (Melin-Johansson et al, 2017).…”

“…Additionally, diagnosis appears to be motivated by the wish to treat and possibly cure, hence the bio-medical model is an arguably easier option in terms of implementation (Paris, 2017). Viewing individuals from a holistic vantage point is important with the stress-vulnerability model and engineering problem solving skills provided by nurses becomes fundamental (Barrett et al 2012;Yura and Walsh 1967;Zubin et al, 1977;Melin-Johansson et al, 2017 (Williams, 2013). However, the CPA framework has been criticised as being a managerial tool that has been undermined by many onerous administrative demands (Rinaldi and Watkeys, 2014;Williams, 2013 however, due to broad differences in the personal and professional experiences of mentors.…”
