Clinical indicators of probing attachment loss following initial periodontal treatment in advanced periodontitis patients

Abstract: 16 advanced periodontitis patients were subjected to initial periodontal treatment and monitored every 3rd month during 42 months. Clinical characteristics at baseline and during the 42-month maintenance period were investigated for their association with probing attachment loss over the 42-month period, both on a patient level and on a site level. On a patient level, averaged full-mouth plaque and bleeding on probing scores over the maintenance interval showed little association with probing attachment loss. … Show more

“…18,19 During periodontal maintenance, BoP and probing pocket depth (PPD) are used as prognostic factors for future periodontal disease activity. 20 The absence of BoP has been shown to be a good indicator of stable CAL, and its presence has a moderate predictive value for future attachment loss. 21 Although one point with minimal bleeding at one site does not have the same clinical meaning as more intense bleeding, BoP is considered to be the best parameter for predicting attachment loss.…”

“…Risk predictorBleeding on probingBleeding on probing can be effective in the diagnosis and monitoring of active periodontal disease, (23) but when used as a stand-alone test ,it can be accurate. A proper diagnosis should include a combination of bleeding on probing, probing depth and clinical attachmentloss (30) .…”
