Clinical Impact of a 6-Week Preoperative Very Low Calorie Diet on Body Weight and Liver Size in Morbidly Obese Patients

Abstract: Based on our results, we demonstrated that a very low calorie diet with home ingredients is capable for effectively reducing body weight and liver size in morbidly obese patients. This relatively short intervention (4 to 6 weeks) was accomplished in all our patients with a high frequency of compliance and a low rate of secondary effects.

“…However, laparoscopic RYGBP is associated with less postoperative pain, lower wound infection rates, shorter hospital stays and reduced incidences of late incisional hernia compared with open gastric bypass [6][7][8]. Therefore, superobese patients benefit from a laparoscopic approach because they tend to experience a greater incidence of postoperative complications, including superficial and deep wound infections, respiratory decompensation and 30-day mortality (13,14).…”

Several studies concerning preoperative diets, such as meal replacement diets [5][6][7][8][9][10], intragastric balloons [11], pharmacologic therapy [12,13], or home ingredients [14], have reported decreased weight and/or liver size. However, to our knowledge, no studies have been performed regarding the preoperative Mediterranean diet, a type of eating pattern that promotes lifelong good health and has beneficial effects on the prevalence and progression of metabolic syndrome [15].…”
