Clinical impact and prevalence of MRSA CC398 and differences between MRSA-TetR and MRSA-TetS in an area of Spain with a high density of pig farming: a prospective cohort study

Abstract: Prevalence of MRSA-Tet (especially CC398) at the hospital level in a Spanish region with intensive pig farming activity is high and is responsible for severe infections. Significant differences were detected in clinical and epidemiologic characteristics among MRSA-Tet and MRSA-Tet patients.

“…However, this genetic lineage has been detected in humans living in an area with high pig farming density in this country (Reynaga et al . 2017). The MRSA CC9 isolate detected in our study did not exhibit a multidrug resistance phenotype nor tetracycline resistance, which is contrary to previous findings (Lo et al .…”

“…After confirmation of the mecA gene, it is important to submit the strains to additional molecular characterization. The techniques that are generally used are as follows: staphylococcal protein A (spa) typing [59,61,[66][67][68], multilocus sequence typing (MLST) [59,61,64,66,67,70], pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) [64][65][66], Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing [59,66].…”

“…The county of Osona has one of the highest pig densities in Spain 5 . In a recent study in this same area of Osona, 57.8% of pig-farm workers were carriers of MRSA-ST398 5 , and approximately 45% of patients diagnosed with MRSA in the hospital of this county in 2015 had the ST398 lineage 10 . These data suggest that the MRSA-ST398 clone plays a significant role both in colonization and in infections in the population of the Osona region.…”
