Clinical Hypnosis as an Adjunct to Cognitive Behavior Therapy: An Updated Meta-Analysis

Abstract: In 1995, Kirsch and colleagues published an influential meta-analysis (k = 20, N = 577) which found that CBT enhanced with hypnosis (CBTH) was superior to CBT alone by at least d = .53. However, a lack of full replication and the emergence of new empirical studies prompted this updated analysis. A total of 48 post-(N = 1,928) and 25 follow-up treatments (N = 1,165) were meta-analyzed. CBTH achieved small to medium but statistically significant advantages over CBT at posttreatment (d IGPP /d = .25 to .41), and … Show more

“…Furthermore, hypnosis is of great use for re-orienting attention away from aversive stimuli, which has warranted it a particularly popular place in acute, chronic, and perioperative pain management therapies ( Patterson and Jensen, 2003 ; Patterson et al, 2006 ; Patterson, 2010 ). It can yield positive results when utilized as stand-alone therapy but is most effective when implemented as a therapeutic complement to an already established psychological treatment or medical procedure ( Ramondo et al, 2021 ). Oftentimes, practitioners wonder whether a hypnotic intervention’s efficacy will be conditioned to the patients’ hypnotic suggestibility.…”

“…Another systematic review study by Flynn [ 35 ] demonstrates that hypnotherapy has a significant impact on the headache activity of patients with migraines and is statistically superior or equivalent to commonly used treatments. Clinical hypnosis can be used as a therapeutic supplement and a powerful tool for enhancing the performance of other psychotherapy [ 36 ]. Meta-analytic evidence suggests that cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) combined with clinical hypnosis is a more effective form of psychotherapy than CBT alone.…”

“…Hypnotic suggestions have been widely used for better understanding the determinants of hypnotic behaviours and experiences (Lynn et al, 2020), as a tool to study cognition (Oakley & Halligan, 2013) and as an adjunct to traditional psychological treatments (Ramondo et al, 2021). Hypnotizability, defined as the ability to successfully experience hypnotic suggestions (Laurence et al, 2008), has been shown to be stable, up to 25 year (Morgan et al, 1974;Piccione et al, 1989) and thus is often considered a trait-like ability.…”
