Clinical, histological and therapeutical aspects in the management of uterine and extrauterine stromal sarcomas: Case reports

Abstract: Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a rare tumor, predominantly occurring as a primary tumor of the uterus. Rare cases of primary extrauterine ESS (EESS) have been reported. Low-grade ESS (LG-ESS) is more common than high-grade ESS (HG-ESS). We present five cases of ESS and one case of EESS. All cases received external radiotherapy (EBRT) at the Radiotherapy Department of the Emergency Clinical Hospital 'Sfantul Apostol Andrei' Galati, during 2004-2020. Five cases underwent EBRT in two-dimensional (2D) techni… Show more

“…Nevertheless, Cyclin D1 and desmin yield negative or focally positive results. Some researchers have pointed out that the immunohistochemical profile of LGESS is characterized by positive staining for CD10, ER, and PR ( 15 ). LGESS can be distinguished based on the presence of IFITM1, providing a level of specificity in its detection ( 16 ).…”

“…Furthermore, the presence of pathological nuclear division (8/10 high-power fields) is more consistent with the characteristics of HGESS. Immunohistochemically, the tumor is positive for CD10 and ER and weakly positive for PR ( 15 ). These findings are consistent with immunological expression of LGESS.…”

“…We believe that an essential principle is multidisciplinary management—a multimodal treatment that should be instituted immediately after diagnosis [ 6 , 23 , 42 ].…”

“…In localized disease instances, surgery is the main treatment followed by adjuvant therapy in stage 3 of the disease; adjuvant radiotherapy is indicated in clinical positive lymph nodes. In metastatic disease, target treatment and immunotherapy are the principal approaches which can integrate radiotherapy and surgery in well selected cases [3,18].…”
