Abstract:Many children with fully accommodative esotropia can be weaned out of spectacles during the grade school years. The degree of baseline hyperopia appears to be one of the best predictors of success.
“…Although some patients can discontinue spectacle wear during adolescence, most continue to require spectacle correction into adulthood. [1][2][3] Many authors studying the mechanisms that regulate human ocular development have suggested that ocular development and refraction are partly regulated by visual feedback related to optical defocus. [4][5][6][7][8] In animal studies, optical blur has been shown to affect ocular development and emmetropization.…”

“…If this result is linked with the results from our previous study,13 there is a high probability that a lower degree of hyperopia suggests an earlier cessation of hyperopia, followed by a higher probability of developing myopia. This finding makes it possible to associate the studies of Lambert et al 12 and Mohney et al 9 They suggested that a lower hyperopic error was associated with successful weaning from hyperopic glasses. In addition, Lambert et al 12 reported that 90.9% of 11 subjects with less than +3.00 D of hyperopia were able to be weaned from hyperopic glasses during the grade school years.…”

“…Studies that did not include active weaning from hyperopic glasses determined that 3–37% of the patients with AET were able to stop wearing hyperopic glasses 4 7–10. However, some studies that performed active weaning from hyperopic glasses revealed that 60% of patients with AET were able to discontinue wearing hyperopic glasses 11 12. We previously published a study on the clinical results of hyperopia and esotropia (ET) resolution in 123 patients with AET who wore hyperopic glasses to achieve the best corrected vision 13.…”
“…Further studies will hopefully elucidate the optimal means to optically correct children with accommodative esotropia to minimize the effect of spectacle wear on emmetropization and sphericalization. 21,22 …”
