Clinical features of Trousseau’s syndrome with multiple acute ischemic strokes

Abstract: Background:Trousseau's syndrome can cause venous or arterial thrombosis, multiple acute ischemic strokes (MAIS) caused by Trousseau's syndrome is rare. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical features of Trousseau's syndrome with MAIS, and to improve the awareness and the knowledge of this disease. Methods:Clinical data from fteen patients who were diagnosed as Trousseau's Syndrome with MAIS in Rizhao people's Hospital from January 2017 to April 2020 were collected and analyzed. The clinical data inc… Show more

“…We hypothesized that the micro-plaque lesion in the carotid artery could be a foothold for the local formation of thrombus due to hypercoagulation caused by the tumor. Cancer-related cerebral infarction (so-called Trousseau’s syndrome) is often characterized by multiple small infarcts in multiple vascular territories [ 10 ], but our case showed that strokes due to CFFT could develop as cancer-related cerebral infarction.…”

“…Trousseau’s syndrome is currently characterized as a group of thromboembolic syndromes ( 3 ) produced by persistent intravascular coagulation, multiple venous thrombosis, arterial thrombosis, and non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis in the presence of malignant tumors. A total of 416 patients with successive malignant tumors were included in a Chinese study in 2020 ( 4 ). The most prevalent malignancies in individuals with Trousseau’s syndrome were discovered to be lung cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, intracranial tumor, and pancreatic cancer.…”

“…The finding of multiple large thrombi in large vessels, both arteries and veins, in the presented case deserves a dedicated consideration as potential clue for a hidden malignancy, being hypercoagulability the most relevant mechanism of CAS [21] and known in its more catastrophic appearance as Trousseau syndrome. It has been associated to the occurrence of multiple territories ischemic stroke [22]. It has been demonstrated in an interesting study [23] that patients with CAS with embolic pattern have an elevated risk of associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) and arterial thromboembolism with a negative impact on the 1-year's prognosis.…”
